Name origin: Named in 1987 by Fabian P. Cesbron, D. Ginderow, R. Giroud, P. Pellisson, and F. Pillard after Austin Flint Rogers (August 15, 1877 - March 10, 1957), American mineralogist at Stanford University, plus the NICKEL- prefix, in allusion to the dominance of Ni over Zn in the composition.
