Gillardite - 132 North Mine, Widgiemooltha, Western Australia, Australia (TYPE LOCALITY) (#:MINS9103)

This is a very rare attractive specimen with emerald green crystalline Gillardite richly set on matrix with Gaspeite in association. Is an extremely rare copper nickel chlorine halide, found only at this locality to date. This mineral seldom crystallizes and although small, these crystals are discrete and eye-visible.

Name origin: Named in 2007 by David M. Colchester, Peter Leverett, Meagan E. Clissold, Peter A. Williams, David E. Hibbs and Ernest H. Nickel in honour of Robert D. Gillard (23 August, 1936, London, England - ) professor, Department of Chemistry, Cardiff University, Wales, in recognition of his contributions to the field of inorganic chemistry.
