Name origin: Named by P. Elliot, Uwe Kolitsch, G. Giester, E. Libowitzky, C. McCammon, A. Pring, William D. Birch, and J. Brugger in 2009 in honor of Professor Ian Rutherford Plimer (b. 12 February 1946, Sydney, Australia), Professor of Mining Geology, The University of Adelaide and Emeritus Professor of Earth Sciences at The University of Melbourne, in recognition of his contributions to the geology of ore deposits, and in particular the geology of the Broken Hill deposit.
