Name origin: Named by W. von Engelhardt, G. Müller, and H. Kromer in honor of Toshio Sudo (1911-2000), professor of mineralogy, University of Tokyo, Japan. He was an expert in clay mineralogy, especially in the alteration processes by which clay minerals are formed. The mineral tosudite is also named in his honor.
