Name origin: The species lipscombite itself was named in honour of William Nunn Lipscomb, Jr. (9 December 1919, Cleveland, Ohio, USA - 14 April 2011, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA), American inorganic and organic chemist, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, who determined the crystal structure of the synthetic compound. The name was originally given to synthetic material. Lipscomb was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1976 “for his studies on the structure of borates, illuminating problems of chemical bonding”.
