Name origin: Named in honor of Charles Le Moyne (2 August 1626, Dieppe, France – February 1685, Montreal, Canada), sieur de Longueuil (Quebec) and members of his family, prominent in early Canadian and American history. Le Moyne who arrived in Canada from France in 1641, became the patriarch of a very illustrious family that included his sons Pierre who served as Governor of Louisiana, and Jean-Baptist, the founder of New Orleans.
