Name origin: Named by P.-J. Chiappero and H. Sarp in 1995 in honor of Dr. Zdenĕk Johan (18 November 1935, Lomnice nad Popelkou, Czech Republic - 13 February 2016, Orléans, France), mineralogist and Director of Scientific Affairs of the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières, France. Vice president of the International Mineralogical Association 1996-1998. The mineral is based on his given name rather than family name because the mineral johannite was already named.
