Name origin: Named in 1833 by Alexandre Brongniart in honor of Ours Pierre Armand Petit Dufrenoy [September 5, 1792 - March 20, 1857), Professor of Mineralogy in the École des Mines, Paris, France. (Because of many look-alike species in the environments where dufrénite occurred, species such as rockbridgeite, etc. were called by that name.)
