Name origin: The name honours Mario Antofilli (1920–1983) for his contribution to the knowledge of the mineralogy of Liguria. During the 1970s and up to his death, he was active in supporting the activities of the Gruppo Mineralogico Ligure, where he served as president for many years. Mario Antofilli was author, along with Emilio Borgo and Andrea Palenzona, of the book I nostri minerali – Geologia e Mineralogia in Liguria, printed in 1983 (Antofilli et al., 1983). Moreover, he published a comprehensive review on Ligurian zeolites (Antofilli, 1982). His findings at the Molinello mine (Graveglia Valley) in the mid-1970s allowed the discovery of tiragalloite, the first natural arsenatotrisilicate (Gramaccioli et al., 1980).
