Some large black spinels are stunning on the surface of this specimen: one is perfectly formed and intact, the others are not. The original tag lists the provenance as CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), an organization created in the 1990s following the dissolution of the USSR: given that the Pamir extends into Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and China, on Mindat the spinels are only mentioned from the first Nation. Former mineralogical collection of Sandro Maggia: no. S-70.
