Name origin: Name re-used in 1922 by Esper Signius Larsen, Jr. and Earl Victor Shannon for a new mineral somewhat chemically similar to the original material, but which had proved to be a mixture. The original bustamite from Real de Minas, Fetela (Tetela de Ocampo), Jonotla, Mexico was a mixture of rhodonite and johannsenite. Originally named in 1826 by Alexandre Brongniart in honor of Anastasio Bustamente y Oseguera [July 27, 1780 Jiquilpan, Michoacán, Mexico - February 6, 1853 San Miguel de Allende, Mexico], a medical doctor, revolutionary, general, and three time president of Mexico. Keatingine described in 1876 by Charles Upham Shepard is bustamite (Palache, 1935), but was discredited (Dana, 1892) before there was the ability to determine the structure of the mineral.
