Name origin: Named by E.I. Semenov, E.M. Bohnshtedt-Kupletskaya, V.A. Moleva, and N.N. Sludskaya in 1956 in honor of Aleksander (Alexander) Pavlovich Vinogradov (Александра Павловича Виноградова) (21 August 1895, Petretsovo, Yaroslavl Oblast, Russian Empire – 16 November 1975, Moscow, USSR), professor of geochemistry, Moscow. He was Director of the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry, USSR Academy of Sciences. Founder and head of the first national department of geochemistry (at Moscow State University). Vice-president of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Mons Vinogradov, a mountain on the near side of the moon, is also named after him, as is a large crater on Mars.
